SPEC ADS : WHAT IS IT? HOW ARE THEY MADE?
What is a spec ad?
A spec ad (short for speculative advertisement) is a sample advertisement created for a real brand but not commissioned or compensated by the brand. Consider it a “mock” campaign in which you select a real product or company that you enjoy. Develop an ad concept using your skills (video, design, copy, etc.). Demonstrate how you would promote it creatively. You are not pretending to work for the brand; rather, you are exhibiting what you could do if given the opportunity.
How Come Spec Ads Are Made?
For students and aspiring marketers, spec ads are revolutionary for the following reasons:
1. Show rather than tell.
You demonstrate actual instances of content strategy, ad design, or video scripting with outcomes that speak louder than words rather than simply declaring, “I’m passionate about social media marketing.”
2. Establish credibility and confidence.
Working with actual audiences and products gives you experience. Additionally, your portfolio will demonstrate your capacity for both strategic and creative thought.
3. Make your portfolio more valuable.
Proactive and solution-focused artists are highly favored by brands. An effective specification ad demonstrates your comprehension of the campaign’s objectives, market positioning, and brand tone.
